If we are to succeed in our struggle to make Georgia’s courts more
accountable and representative, our efforts must be truly
multi-dimensional.
Abstract calls
for a more open and transparent selection process are not enough.
Calling on incumbent politicians to be more inclusive in their appointments
to judgeships and to nominating commissions is not enough. Even
recruiting and supporting talented and diverse candidates in judicial
elections is not enough.
We must also reach out to potential
appointing authorities before they are elected to assure that, if
elected, they will come into office with an understanding of the value
of judicial diversity.
We have a unique opportunity to pursue this kind of outreach in advance of this year’s State-wide general elections.
The person who is elected Governor on November 4 will have the
opportunity to make numerous appointments to courts throughout this
State and to the State’s Judicial Nominating Commission. Likewise, our
next United States Senator will likely play a major role in making
several lifetime appointments to our federal courts.
With the
assistance of Atlanta City Council President Ceasar Mitchell, we will
have a unique opportunity on October 11, 2014 to speak directly with a
potential Governor and a potential Senator and let them know that
Georgians want a talented and diverse judiciary, and that Georgians will
support candidates who share this concern.
We hope you will
attend this important event. Please RSVP to advocacyforaction@gmail.com
